About the album

NOR59 String Institute was originally founded in 1972 as Nordstrandhogda String Orchestra, an amalgamation of several school orchestras from local schools in the Nordstrand area of Oslo, Norway. In 2009 Thorn Magnus Reymert took over as conductor. At that time the orchestra consisted of 12 members. Reymert had high ambitions and a desire to create a large and unique orchestral environment. A focus on recruitment was initiated, and today the orchestra has 130 members divided into five levels: chamber, main, junior, aspirant, and pre-aspirant orchestras. Diversity is a key value in NOR59, something which is consciously developed in order to create an orchestral environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate regardless of their particular background.

The musicians playing on this album are between 13 and 17 years old and are students of NOR59 String Institute in Oslo, Norway. Most of the students started their musical journeys with us or joined us as young children. NOR59 has consciously never had auditions or other forms of selection for our students.

For this album, the orchestra has chosen works by Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich for an exciting Russian programme.

Wat verfrissend dit album van een onbekommerd en enthousiast Jeugd Strijkorkest, met muziek van Pjotr Iljitsj Tsjaikovski en Dmitri Sjostakovitsj voor een spannend Russisch programma. De musici die in deze opname spelen zijn tussen de 13 en 17 jaar en zijn studenten van het NOR95 String Institute in Oslo, Noorwegen. Deze jonge Noren laten gedisciplineerd en behoorlijk bekwaam de optimistisch vrolijker kant van Tsjaikovski en de bezonnen, somberder kant van Sjostakovitsj horen met mooi flexibel spel..

Vrolijke serenade

Tsjaikovski componeerde zijn vermoedelijk vrolijkste werk, de Serenade, direct na de Ouverture 1812. Naar eigen zeggen schreef hij die ouverture in opdracht, zonder passie, terwijl de Serenade voor strijkers "een liefdevol werkje is en dus, zo hoop ik toch, niet gespeend van echte kwaliteit". En het klopt. De Serenade druist in tegen het beeld dat heel wat mensen van de componist hebben: een door doem en wanhoop bezeten mens. Pas tegen het einde van het derde deel, de 'Elegie', horen we wat subtiele melancholie doorbreken.

Werk als een cryptogram

Een heel andere wereld biedt het veelgeprezen Strijkkwartet nr. 8 van Sjostakovitsj uit 1960. Het is muziek die heel direct communiceert en die kan worden gezien als een monument voor de slachtoffers van het fascisme zoals de componist dat na een emotioneel verwarrend bezoek aan Dresden onderging. In die zin heeft het werk met zijn markante bouwstenen ook iets van een cryptogram.

Bewust geen auditie

De meeste studenten begonnen al op jonge leeftijd aan hun muzikale reis bij NOR59. Zonder auditie te hoeven doen. Het NOR59 String Institute, dat in 1972 werd opgericht onder de naam Nordstrandhøgda String Orchestra, kiest er bewust voor geen audities te houden of andere vormen van selectie voor studenten te hanteren. Artistiek leider Thorn Magnus Reymert heeft de filosofie dat alle kinderen een instrument kunnen bespelen, als hen maar de juiste omgeving wordt geboden, door begrip en aandacht voor hun individualiteit. Hij creëerde een geheel eigen visie en ontwikkelde een uniek systeem van muziekonderwijs en de mogelijkheid om als musicus te groeien, met verbazingwekkende resultaten voor de jonge generatie. Kunst, magie en geloof in menselijke middelen, zorgen ervoor dat mensen kunnen blijven groeien, is hij van mening.

From the orchestra’s 130 members, 20 well- functioning chamber groups have been formed, each of which receives weekly tuition and reg- ular performance opportunities. NOR59 also runs it’s own Summer Course that attracts chil- dren and youth from all over Norway.
In 2017 the orchestra entered into an important financial agreement with the Kavli Fund which opened up for significantly increased activity. Over the following year NOR59 was able to initiate extensive concerts and tour activities in Norway and Europe. A close collaboration with the professional orchestra The FeelHarmony, led by the inter- nationally renowned violinist and conductor Stefan Plewniak, has made a series of large symphonic productions possible.

Diversity is a key value in NOR59, something which is consciously developed in order to create an orchestral environment where everyone has the opportunity to participate regardless of their particular background. In 2013 Kari Gustavsson published the report “A Reasonable Chance” based on interviews conducted with orchestra members. The in- terviews in the report aroused strong emotions among many and stands out as a unique mani- festo of a successful integration project. Thorn Magnus Reymert (conductor)

Thorn Magnus Reymert is a charismatic violinist, concertmaster, teacher, and founder of the orchestra and String institute in Oslo called NOR 59. Thorn Magnus was born in Oslo and started playing violin at age of 5. In the teenage years he created with his friends his own band called Wæx with which he was touring in Norway and other European countries. Later he was playing also with the Improvisation groups called Hybris and LUN. After studies he came back to Oslo in 2008 and since 2009 he started to work with the Nordstrandhøgda String Orchestra which had back then 12 members, and he transformed and developed it into the NOR 59 String Institute, which has now more than 130 members and is now one of the most prominent and promising private music institutions and initiatives in Norway.
Thorn Magnus built up his own vision, and he developed an unique system of teaching music and growing as a musician which gives amazing results for the young generation. It’s arts, magic and believe in human resources that ones given a chance, never stops growing. It’s a mixture of his philosophy and experience with the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. Lately Thorn Magnus started cooperation between NOR59 Orchestra and The FeelHarmony Orchestra based in Cracow and Vienna, of which he is a concertmaster since 2016. He is touring regularly, giving concerts and recording albums in Norway and abroad.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky is considered as one of the most talented Russian composers of the 19th century. Unlike many other Russian composers of his time, he studied at a conservatory and made the western music theory his own. So, he was not as distrustful of western music as the group of nationalistic composers surrounding Balakirev. Yet, Tchaikovsky sought to express the typical Russian mentality just as much and used many Russian folk songs in his music. He had a good relationship with Balakirev, who helped him with constructive feedback on his first masterpiece, the overture of Romeo and Juliet. At times, Tchaikovsky was emotionally unstable, which has often been attributed to struggles with his homosexuality. His decision to marry proved to be disastrous and plunged him into a deep crisis. Yet, the passionate letters of his fiance, even though they barely knew each other, did inspire him to compose his succesful opera Evgenij Onegin. Tchaikovsky had the wonderful gift of composing the most beautiful, lyric melodies. He had a feeling for creating a certain atmosphere in his music and mastered the art of orchestration. Moreover, he excelled in dance music, which made him the ideal composer for ballet. With his ballets The Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker he brought the genre to a higher level. During his life, he was already a celebrity. He often did tours to conduct his music and in the USA he was welcomed as a star. He died unexpectedly, nine days after the premiere of his incredibly gloomy Sixth Symphony, probably of cholera. Some other highlights of his body of works are his First Piano Concerto, his Violin Concerto and the Rococo-variations.
